Featured Project – COSTAATT Main Administration Building
Location: Pierre Connector Road, Chaguanas
Contractor: NH International Caribbean Limited
This project, which was managed by NIPDEC, consisted of one main three (3) storey building, along with exterior works and other ancillary facilities such as car parks, water tank farm, detention pond etc. Our contract included the design and construction of the main building which comprised RC shear walls, along with RC beams and columns. This project had a very compressed construction schedule and so a special mix design was prepared by a concrete technologist to develop early strength gain concrete that will permit early striking of the FORSA formwork system and a fast turnaround on the modular construction. This allowed formwork modules to move from one bay to the next very quickly and thus permitted the finishes aspect of the works to closely follow behind. The post tensioned slab on grade foundations were constructed in the peak of the rainy season but still finished in a timely fashion.
The building also had structural steel elements to it. The classroom area had a zero column density feature that called for large steel trusses to be erected. Due to the floor to floor height restriction, the top chord and truss framing members were positioned above the roof slab and the bottom chord was anchored to the RC columns with high strength cast in place anchor bolts. The main feature staircase in the atrium had a proprietary skylight and the main lobby staircase was also constructed in structural steel. The porte cochere was a steel truss frame spanning 16 meters into main stanchions which were ultimately tied back to the main concrete building.
